I discovered last night that I haven’t lost my copy of Mercenaries, Spies, and Private Eyes after all. I had it backed up on an old laptop. Apparently MSPE was based off of the Tunnels and Trolls game system, which I believe is a loose AD&D clone. I’ll have to look at it a lot closer. Unfortunately, it’s not the newest “Combined Edition”, which is the core rulebook plus a ton of content that had been included in a couple revisions. As far as I can tell, it’s the same ruleset. If it’s as good as the quick review I did of it last night, I might just have to pick this newest version up while it’s still on sale.
